The Rev. Betsy Sentigar with The Rt. Rev. Kevin D. Nichols, Bishop
The Rev. Betsy Sentigar will be serving as our Deacon in Charge beginning September 5 for a minimum period of six months
Rev. Betsy Sentigar will be serving Christ Church Towanda as Deacon in Charge. Recently graduating from the Stephenson School of Ministry (Diocese of Central Pa.) she acquired her certificate for Worker Priest after 4 years of study there. She has had many active decades of service in the church to include child education and formation, years of vestry work to include serving as both junior and senior warden, altar guild, choir, acolyte, and music and liturgical planning. She has led numerous bible studies, book groups and a few retreats. In the diocese of Bethlehem, Betsy has been licensed as a Worship Leader and Eucharistic Visitor for several years.
Rev. Betsy remembers her first inklings of desire to become a priest dating back to 2003. It took many years to discern a call and to actively pursue it. In 2017, she found a pathway for formal discernment and prayerfully decided to move forward. She earned a certificate as a Spiritual Director in 2009 from the "Wings" Program started by Bexley Hall (Rochester NY) professors and then also was granted a certificate in Group Spiritual Direction from Shalem Institute (Bethesda, MD)
A lifelong resident of Elmira, NY, Betsy is married to John (J) Sentigar. Together they have two children, John (35) who resides in Pittsburgh Pa. and Catherine Sentigar Smith (32) who lives in Charlotte, NC and was recently married August 20th. Her secular work for more than 4 decades has been as a Specialist in Clinical Microbiology, serving different hospitals in the region. She graduated from Elmira College with a degree in Medical Technology in which her internship was completed at Guthrie Medical Center in 1977.
As a family, the Sentigars love spending time together with a large extended family of more that 50 people who mostly live in the Elmira and Finger Lakes area. The roots of her family, as far back as she can find, hearken from Halstead Pa. Pennsylvania means a lot to me, she remarks as her education was there, the birth of her children were in Sayre, Pa. where her dad built the Guthrie Clinic and where her theological education has taken place.
Rev. Betsy is energized by people, by authentic relationships, journeying together in spiritual practices and formation. Service in God's Church is paramount in these times. It is challenging, invigorating and life-giving as we navigate a difficult era of conflict. I look forward to serving the people of Towanda and discerning how God wants our community to respond to a hurting world. As a lifelong Episcopalian, Betsy is eager to serve Christ Church. The challenges of our society deeply task our community to see how the Church lives out its mission in the world. Her passion is to serve the church in preserving its tradition, leading formation and by welcoming all people unconditionally.
As Rev. Betsy settles in, we plan to expand with a weekday morning prayer service and a Bible study group. Watch our opening page for information about her Office Hours.
